    FAQ: Single, twin-share and more

    What is twin-share, triple-share and quad-share?

The share-basis is about accommodation pricing. It does not mean that you share a room with a stranger.

"Twin-share" is where two people occupy a hotel room (open-plan style) or other accommodation such as an apartment, usually a couple or two friends. This is the normal way accommodation is priced. The price is shared between two people. Most accommodation properties (eg. hotels) offer rooms with king, queen or double beds. Most offer the option of "twin" beds as well which actually means two single beds to accommodate singles sharing, couples wanting space and so-on.

"Triple share" is where three people occupy the accommodation and share the price. "Quad-share" is where four people occupy the accommodation and share the price. Family apartments and hotel rooms usually include a king, queen or double bed and one or more single beds to handle triple and quad-share arrangements. Sometimes other bedding configurations are available as well.

    What is a seasonal adjustment?

Some accommodation providers, especially in very popular holiday locations, have higher room rates for busy holiday periods (usually spring and summer holidays). We must make an allowance for those price variations if applicable.

    What is a single supplement?

A "single supplement" applies to single travellers who want a room to themselves. Because the price is not shared, a "single supplement" applies. This additional amount is based on the single covering the entire accommodation component of the trip that would normally be split between two or more people.

TALBOT BAY - MOUNT HART (3 NIGHTS)

The Mt. Hart Station lease covers almost a million acres in the King Leopold Ranges. The landscape with its sheltered green valleys and many unusual geological features is very different from the rest of the Gibb River Road.

    About today:

    Mount Hart

Journey into the heart of the King Leopold Ranges Conservation Park

After breakfast, we will take a scenic flight over the Buccaneer Archipelago, back to Derby. We make a brief stop at the 1500-year-old Boab Prison Tree, and historic Myall’s Bore.

From here we commence our journey along the iconic Gibb River Road on a scenic drive through ancient outback landscapes of the Kimberley.

Heading deep into the heart of the Kimberley, we view a startling rock formation resembling a profile view of Queen Victoria’s head as we pass through a gap in the jagged and stunning 350 million year old Devonian limestone cliffs of the Napier Range.

Shortly after we enter the ancient, rugged King Leopold Ranges with its many creek and gorges on our way to Mount Hart Wilderness Lodge. The Lodge is nestled in a tropical oasis on the banks of the Barker River and the area abounds with abundant bird and wildlife populations.

    DAY 5
    MOUNT HART

    About today:

    Explore Mount Hart

Discover the unique landscapes of Mount Hart

Mount Hart Wilderness Lodge is located on the former Mount Hart cattle station, which encompasses Bell Gorge and Silent Grove, was first taken up around 1919. Since then, there have been a succession of pastoralists who failed to make the station a success and walked off the lease because the land, despite its abundant rainfall and beauty was too rugged and unsuitable for pastoral enterprises.

In 1991 the Department of Conservation and Land Management acquired the land to create the King Leopold Conservation Park. The park, which covers over 392,000 hectares features many ragged ranges, inaccessible waterfalls and gorges, abundant and rare wildlife and is one of the last true remaining Wilderness areas of the World.

Following breakfast, we will discover the unique gorges at Mt Hart. We will visit the unique twisted boabs at Annie Creek Gorge and enjoy an easy short hike into Dolerite Gorge. The Barker river flows between the gorge’s steep cliffs of black dolerite rock of volcanic origin and is unique in the Kimberley. The more adventurous may explore a further 900 metres upstream and cool off in private clear natural rock spas.

In the afternoon, it’s time for another delightful swim in a classic Kimberley billabong at Barker Pool with its shady tree lined banks, Lilly pads and cool clear fresh water, also a great fishing spot.
In our open 4WD Safari wagon you will truly appreciate the Kimberley savannah landscape. Returning to the Lodge you can enjoy a refreshing drink at the fully licensed bar amid the lush tropical gardens.

    BELL GORGE

    About today:

    Bell Gorge

Embark on a day trip to Bell Gorge

Today’s adventure is a return 4WD journey to Bell Gorge, one of the most iconic gorges and waterfalls of the Gibb River Road.

Making our way further into the King Leopold Ranges that rise to some 950 metres above sea level and passing the old Silent Grove homestead we will enjoy a day of swimming and exploring one of the most impressive waterfalls and gorges of the Gibb River Road.

At its entrance, Bell Gorge has a stunning permanent waterfall. Torrents of water flowing north west over the millennia from the King Leopold Range have cut down through the ancient sandstone rocks to form a spectacular gorge. At 300 metres above sea level it is the beginning of a series of waterfalls and rapids some 80 kilometres long descending through the King Leopold and Isdell Ranges to Walcott Inlet before entering the Timor sea at Yule Entrance.

Bell Gorge is a great spot for swimming, photography and for enjoying the best of what nature has to offer. After a relatively moderate one kilometre down hill walk, you will be rewarded with the irresistible opportunity to take your first swim in a magical Kimberley waterhole at the top of the falls.

The more adventurous may choose to venture further and climb down to the bottom of the waterfall and enjoy a thunderous refreshing shower in the crystal-clear waters of the plunge pool. You may even spot a “Mertens Water Monitor” sunning itself on the rock ledges, or rock wallabies resting in the shade of the overhanging ledges. Afterwards we will head back to Mt Hart for a relaxed dinner and our last night’s stay.

Enjoy some free time this morning exploring the town of Kununurra. After a drive to Lake Argyle, we will enjoy a spectacular cruise on the placid waters of Ord River, returning to Kununurra. This is sure to be a day that will be a highlight of your tour.

The construction of the Ord River Dam was completed in 1971 by the American Dravo Corporation and officially opened in 1972. The Dam is 335 metres long and 98 metres high.

The lake was named after the historic cattle station Argyle Downs settled by the famous Durack family in the 1880’s. The homestead and most of the station are now submerged beneath the lake.

The islands and wetlands have become the home of a thriving habitat of migrating waterbirds and an estimated population of 25,000 harmless freshwater crocodiles. It is now an Internationally recognised Wetland.

At the northern edge of the Great Sandy Desert and Tanami Desert, Halls Creek is the gateway to a range of renowned natural attractions and outback drives.

    About today:

    Halls Creek

Learn about the land's sacred Indigenous history

Today after breakfast we will travel to the northern end of the Park with great views of the western walls of the Bungles Massif with its startling rounded domes rising sheer above the plain.

The area is rich in indigenous heritage and has many sites of significance to the “Kitja” and “Karjanara Jaru” people that inhabited the area for thousand of years.

We will walk through the very special Echidna Chasm. A spectacular narrow, long chasm, your walk follows the chasm deep into the Bungle Bungle Range. The further you go, the narrower it gets. At times you can touch both sides that rear 200 metres straight up above you with Livistona palms waving from the ridges high above.

It has striking colour variations, depending on the angle of the sun beaming into the chasm. With luck our visit will co-inside with the few minutes each day when the sun penetrates to the bottom of the chasm in a spectacular display of colour and light.

The amazing rounded conglomerate boulders strewn along the path provide a clue to the violent geological past and sedimentary origins of the Bungle Bungle Range. This afternoon we will head back out to the Great Northern Highway to continue our journey to Halls Creek.

After a long but unforgettable day you will enjoy a scrumptious Kimberley dinner before settling in for our overnight stay.

    DAY 12
HALLS CREEK - FITZROY RIVER (1 NIGHT)

The mighty Fitzroy River is one of the Kimberley region’s most important and iconic waterways, carving out ancient gorges and flowing through rugged hills and plains for a distance of 750 kilometres.

    About today:

    Fitzroy River

Immerse yourself in natural history as you cruise on Geikie Gorge

Gold was first discovered in Western Australia at Halls Creek by Charlie Hall on Christmas Day in 1885. Today Halls Creek is a trading and administrative centre for this vast pastoral area. You will have the opportunity to visit the Halls Creek Visitor Centre with it great collection of mementos and souvenirs of the area.

Leaving Halls Creek we skirt the southern edge of the Kimberley plateau as we drive through huge cattle stations on our way to Fitzroy Crossing. We will learn of the early pastoralists and their epic droves of mobs of cattle from Eastern Australia and their isolated and difficult lives in a harsh, remote and unfamiliar country.

This will be our second encounter with the mighty Fitzroy River, where it has carved through an ancient limestone barrier reef creating Geikie Gorge.

It presents stunning photo opportunities with the reflections of the colourful limestone cliffs and freshwater crocodiles sunning on the banks and in the placid pools, that later turn into raging torrents in the Wet Season.

On our included cruise we will hear from an expert guide and will learn of the indigenous culture and bush tucker of the indigenous “Banuba” people and the natural history of the area we cruise on Geikie Gorge.

Tonight we will be accommodated in luxury safari tents on the banks of the Fitzroy River that have to be dismantled each year because of flooding and dine in the excellent restaurant of the Fitzroy River Lodge, another indigenous owned and managed tourism facility in the Kimberley.

    About today:

    Windjana Gorge

Enjoy lunch at the colourful and rugged Windjana Gorge

We start our final day early as we explore more of the Napier Range.

Our first stop is Tunnel Creek, Western Australia’s oldest cave system was the hiding spot for the aboriginal outlaw “Jandamarra”, and we will take a unique torch light walking tour (wading in some places) along the underground bed as it flows beneath the range.

The Lennard River also carves its way through the range at Windjana Gorge and is part of this same ancient Devonian great barrier reef system, that is far larger than the famous Great Barrier Reef, but now exposed on the surface. It was laid down in an ancient sea that covered a large part of the Kimberley in Devonian times, some 350 million years ago.
The colourful and rugged Windjana Gorge with its vertical limestone cliffs, fossil fish and deep green pools inhabited by dozens of freshwater crocodiles is sure to impress with its distinctive primeval feel and you are sure to capture some amazing photographs.

After a picnic lunch at Windjana Gorge we say goodbye to the Gibb River Road for the final time and make our way to Broome and check in to our hotel and enjoy a farewell dinner with our fellow adventurers and new friends.
