“Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.” – Dalai Lama

DAY 1: ARRIVE AYERS ROCK (3 NIGHTS)

Arrive at Ayers Rock Airport be picked up by the complimentary transfer service who will take you to the resort. Once you have checked into your comfortable room you might wish to explore some of the free time activities mentioned below:

    Uluru elders

    Indigenous Culture

If wildlife animates the Australian outback, it is the Indigenous population of the Northern Territory (NT) that gives it soul. These are a people whose lives remain inextricably tied to a land that their people have inhabited for millennia. And, unlike elsewhere in Australia, in the NT it's relatively easy to cross the cultural frontier and meet Indigenous Australians on their terms: it could happen on an intimate exploration of country led by an Indigenous guide, in quiet conversation with artists at work in one of the NT's many art centres, or in the timeless rituals and ceremonies of a festival.

This afternoon you can relax by the pool or avail yourself of some of the free cultural activities happening around the resort. Perhaps you could visit the camel farm or book a camel tour. You might also wish to venture to the small shopping village of Yulara where you will often find indigenous paintings being sold (we recommend buying them directly rather than from the overpriced art galleries) as well as a small take-away shop, gift store and supermarket.

    DAY 2: ULURU (AYERS ROCK)

    Uluru sunrise tour:

Wake up early and be collected by your local tour guide before the sun is even in the sky. On your way to the highlight of this destination you will stop at a viewing location to see the sunrise and watch the changing colours of Uluru, the surrounding landscapes and the incredible desert skies that stretch from horizon to horizon. Then continue to Uluru and explore the rock itself. This is an experience like no other and cannot be put into words (you’ll see what we mean when you get there).

    • Glorious & breath-taking sunrise over Uluru
    • Outback picnic breakfast as you watch the dawn break
    • Anangu legends & creation stories at Mutitjulu Waterhole
    • Scenic drive around Uluru's base with guidance from an expert
    • Captivating stories of the ancient Mala people

Upgrade to Uluru base walk for $49 per person.

Field of Light performance and dinner:

Once you have returned to your hotel, you might wish to relax for the afternoon or again explore some of the free time activities. Then tonight you'll be whisked off to a once in a lifetime dining experience at the Field of Light. With Uluru as the backdrop you will enjoy canapés and chilled sparkling wine to the sounds of a didgeridoo as the sun slowly sets.

    Field of Lght dinner

As darkness gradually falls and the coloured lights of the 50,000 glass spheres come to life you'll enjoy a local indigenous performance, before joining your fellow travellers at the dinner table for a sumptuous, three-course, bush tucker-inspired buffet menu.

    • General admission to Field of Light
    • Introduction by a host
    • Guests arrive at a raised Dune area 30 minutes before sunset.
    • Canapés and chilled sparkling wine and drinks are served to the sounds of a didgeridoo
    • Twilight viewing of the Field of Light from this raised area as darkness gradually falls

    • 45min walk-through of the illuminated Field of Light exhibition
    • Return to the raised Dune Top viewing area in the darkness

DAY 3: KATA TJUTA (THE OLGAS)

    Kata Tjuta afternoon tour:

You have a chance to sleep in today and take in some relaxed, free-time activities before you head off to Kata Tjuta and the Valley of the Winds. Some say this is equally as impressive as Uluru. Learn about the history and walk through the rocks before heading to a viewing location to again watch the incredible effect the sun has on the scenery and rocks around you as it sets into the distance. We recommend that you get plenty of rest for tomorrow.

    • Opportunity to watch Kata Tjuta change colour as the sun sets
    • Discovery of 36 rock domes that date back 500 million years
    • A sip of superb Australian wine & canapés from your lookout
    • Exploration of the site's spiritual and geological relevance
    • Insight into a sacred site in Australia's Northern Territory

DAY 4: AYERS ROCK - KINGS CANYON - ALICE SPRINGS (6 NIGHTS)

Tour and transfer to Alice Springs via Kings Canyon:

Today you will depart Ayers Rock Resort on a coach to Alice Springs via Kings Canyon. You will have plenty of time to take in the outback landscapes along the way. Stop off at Kings Canyon where you will have the option to make the rocky climb to the rim of the canyon for marvellous views or take an easier walk to explore the boulder-strewn canyon floor and get lunch at the resort before continuing to Alice Springs and checking-in to your Alice Springs accommodation.

    • Trip to the heart of Watarrka National Park & Kings Canyon
    • Visit to an outback cattle station at Kings Creek
    • Guided stroll along the Rim Walk or Creek Bed Walk
    • Impressive views of red sandstone walls & cliffs
    • An oasis of natural spring waterholes at the Garden of Eden

    DAY 5: ALICE SPRINGS

    Afternoon city tour:

Enjoy a relaxing, slow-paced morning before being collected from your hotel for your afternoon city tour where you will get first hand local knowledge on this unique outback city and its history. West MacDonnell Ranges tour:

Today you will be collected from your hotel early in the morning for an unimaginable day exploring the West MacDonnell Ranges with its exquisite landscapes. Immerse yourself in the scenery of red rocky ranges that reach up to the sky, gorges and bottomless waterholes that will blow your mind before being returned to your Alice Springs Accommodation.

    • Epic views of the fiery red walls of the MacDonnell Ranges
    • Scenic walks through picturesque Simpsons Gap & Ochre Pits
    • Morning tea at Standley Chasm & lunch at Ormiston Gorge
    • Chance to swim at the Ellery Creek Big Hole in warmer months
    • Mountain ranges drenched in warm sunset colours at night

    DAY 7: ALICE SPRINGS

With your full day tour yesterday and another tomorrow, we recommend that you get enough rest so that you don’t find yourself needing a holiday from your holiday. If you feel as though you are well rested or just want to get the most out of your time here then you can always head into town to explore the local galleries, restaurants, gift shops and other attractions like the Desert Park.

Tip: There is a wonderful Vietnamese Restaurant called TINH & LAN just out of town. It would be about a 15min taxi trip, and it is only open on selected days of the week, but it's worth the drive if you like Vietnamese food.

DAY 8: ALICE SPRINGS - PALM VALEY

    Palm Valley tour:

Today you will be picked-up from your hotel early in the morning for a day of 4x4 adventuring into the desert. Admire the Aboriginal art collection at Hermannsburg, see spectacular rock formations by the Finke River, and check out prehistoric relic plants in the desert oasis of Palm Valley on this full-day tour before being returned to your Alice Springs Accommodation.

    • Adventurous 4-wheel-drive tour around Alice Springs
    • Watercolour paintings in the Aboriginal town of Hermannsburg
    • Unique sandstone formations & rare, prehistoric relic plants
    • Shifting colours & afternoon light at the MacDonnell Range
    • Tasty picnic lunch amid Finke Gorge's primordial landscape

    DAY 9: ALICE SPRINGS

You will be flying home tomorrow so again we recommend that (a) you are well rested, (b) you haven’t missed anything in Alice Springs and (c) you have plenty of souvenirs for friends and family for when you get home. Refer to your Lonly Planet guide for additional things to see and do.

    DAY 10: RETURN HOME

By this time you'll have experienced the best of Central Australia. Now it’s time to say goodbye to Alice and be collected by your airport shuttle transport before flying home. If you get a chance, look out the window as you take off and you will see the East MacDonnell ranges. The view from the air makes it easy to see why the indigenous people refer to the ranges as the “caterpillars” moving across the land.

"Hi, have finally returned. Wonderful, wonderful trip. We think we loved Paris and its age/artworks but all was full of laughter fun and learning. Paris apartment was beautiful, & quiet when windows were closed, which wasn't bad anyway. The street is full of lots of restaurants and cafe's. (we also loved Shakespeare & co bookshop.) Fruit and chocolates in most rooms and champagne which I think we only drank in Brussels. we were ready for bed everywhere else though we almost had it for morning tea at Amsterdam on check in. Magnificent. Cheers." Val C.

"Have just returned from our wonderful trip to the UK. Just wanted to say a huge thanks for your organisation, we had the best holiday ever, an absolutely marvellous time, the tour was magnificent. We would recommend the Trafalgar Britain and Ireland Winter delights tour to anyone who wants to do adventurous travel, learning about other countries, and making friends. The coach was actually over half full of Aussies! Thanks so much for organising such a memorable holiday for us." Lee D.

"Deb and I are very grateful for the work you have put into our holiday. 10 days in and we are blown away by the quality and location of the motels and apartments. Many thanks." Jen W.

"My husband and I have recently returned from a holiday to Canada and Alaska booked through Australian Escapes. The itinerary was planned to take in all aspects of the holiday we required. The travel transfers worked seamlessly and the accommodation was at a standard that met our expectations of comfort and location. We absolutely loved the cruise and surprise upgrade to our stateroom. From our experience with this recent trip I would recommend Australian Escapes." Margaret & Bill T.

"We've arrived back safely after a thoroughly enjoyable trip where all the arrangements ran like clockwork, for which we want to thank you and your team, especially Sonya and Skye. We'd have no hesitation in recommending you and Volga Dream cruises to anyone who asks. Kind regards and thanks again." Irene and Blake S.

"I want to thank you for all the accommodation you arranged for us during our holiday in North Queensland in August. It was all excellent. The transfers went very smoothly too and we couldn’t have been more pleased with our holiday. Thank you for making everything so easy." Gloria K.

"My life has been like a whirlwind since I got back. I am now on holidays and catching up with people that I have not had time to contact since coming back. Thank you so much for organising my trip to The States and Canada for me. I had a great time and everything went really well. All flights went well. The hotel you booked me into in Champaign was a really old home with beautiful gardens, all done up and run by two gay guys. It was really quaint and I loved it. I had a great time, everything went without a hitch, I loved all the accommodation that you organized for me and I would like to wish you a happy Christmas and all the best." Marlene S.

"A message of thanks to you and your staff. The holiday went off without any problems and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and and had a wonderful time. Again many thanks." Dianne D.

"We are back and rested after a hectic few weeks (away), but everything worked out extremely well. Thanks so much for all your organisation – once you get used to the trains and buses, life becomes easy. Once again, thanks to you and the team for all the organisation from both Lorraine and I – we really enjoyed the holiday. All the best." Bob C.

"We just wanted to let you know that the arrangements you put in place for us in WA worked beautifully. You said the Margaret River accommodation was exceptional and it certainly was both in terms of location and facilites. Thanks again." Betty and Clancy S.
